WASHINGTON — Travelers at some of the busiest U.S. airports may soon see additional flight disruptions due to the lengthy government shutdown.

The Federal Aviation Administration announced Wednesday that it would reduce air traffic by 10% at 40 "high-volume" airports starting on Friday, citing fatigue among air traffic controllers who have worked without pay since the shutdown began.

The move is intended to keep the airspace safe during the shutdown, the agency said.

Experts predict hundreds if not thousands of flights could be canceled . The cuts could represent as many as 1,800 flights and upwards of 268,000 seats combined, according to an estimate by aviation analytics firm Cirium .
