The Dallas Cowboys announced the death of defensive end Marshawn Kneeland on Thursday morning. He was 24 years old. The team shared the news in a statement at 8:35 a.m., expressing their sorrow over the loss. "It is with extreme sadness that the Dallas Cowboys share that Marshawn Kneeland tragically passed away this morning. Marshawn was a beloved teammate and member of our organization. Our thoughts and prayers regarding Marshawn are with his girlfriend, Catalina, and his family," the statement read.
Kneeland was in his second season with the Cowboys after being drafted in the second round (56th overall) in 2024 from Western Michigan University. He had recently made headlines by scoring his first career touchdown just three days prior during a game against the Arizona Cardinals. Kneeland recovered a blocked punt in the end zone during that match, which ended in a loss for the Cowboys.
In the current season, Kneeland played in seven of the team's nine games, recording one sack, 15 tackles, and six quarterback pressures. His rookie season in 2024 was marked by injury, causing him to miss six games, but he still managed to participate in 11 games, including one start.
The NFL also released a statement following Kneeland's passing, expressing their condolences. "We are deeply saddened by the tragic news of the passing of Cowboys’ Marshawn Kneeland. Our thoughts and prayers are with his girlfriend, Catalina, his family, friends, and his teammates. We have been in contact with the Cowboys and have offered support and counseling resources," the league stated.
The Cowboys are currently on a bye week and are scheduled to face the Las Vegas Raiders on November 17. The cause of Kneeland's death has not been disclosed.
