Mobile Mayor Spiro Cheriogotis said a much-debated ordinance targeting downtown blight could become a “toothless tiger” if city councilors no longer require property owners to register their vacant properties themselves.
The proposal former mayor Sandy Stimpson introduced in September aimed to make landlords with properties inside the Henry Aaron Loop list blighted and vacant buildings on a city registry, pay an annual fee that varies based on the property’s size, provide proof of liability insurance, implement protection measures and more.
