Taxpayers in 25 states will need to find a new way to file their taxes in 2026 as the IRS has shut down the free Direct File option. Details are limited, but the IRS has confirmed the program launched during former President Joe Biden’s term has been shuttered.
"Direct File is closed. More information will be available at a later date," reads a notice on the Direct File login page.
Along with the notice, limited answers to eight questions regarding tax returns can be found, but nothing else.
One of the answers is to a question of major concern for those who’ve previously used the service. Taxpayers who’ve used the program can no longer directly access their prior returns. Instead, they’re directed to file a form to request a copy of the return.
