PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WPRI) — The trial for the man accused of stabbing another man to death more than a decade ago began Thursday.
Jason Lopes, 38, has been charged with first-degree murder in connection with the death of 22-year-old Zackary Marshall back in December 2010.
In his opening statement, Assistant Attorney General Timothy Healy claimed Lopes stabbed Marshall four times during an altercation outside of a Providence bar.
"[Lopes] introduced what proved to be a deadly weapon — a knife — into that fist fight," Healy said. "He left him on a cold sidewalk in downtown Providence, to bleed out, gasping his last breaths."
John Calcagni, Lopes' attorney, argued that his client stabbed Marshall in self defense.
