A man was killed by a Muskegon County deputy early Friday morning after the man rushed at the deputy with a weapon.

The incident started just before 5 a.m. at the Comfort Inn in Whitehall Township near US 31. A 911 caller said her son, a 37-year-old Mears man, was staying at the hotel and may try to harm himself.

Lt. Austin Aamodt with the Muskegon County Sheriff's Office said responding deputies were unable to make contact with the man. When they entered the room, they found him unresponsive with self-inflicted wounds.

As one deputy went outside to get medical supplies from a patrol vehicle, the man then charged at another deputy with a box cutter outside the room, Aamodt said.
