All kindergarten through Grade 3 students in Alberta could soon be required to take mandatory reading and math tests under Bill 6, the province’s proposed law aimed at identifying learning gaps early.

The provincial government has introduced the Education (Prioritizing Literacy and Numeracy) Amendment Act that would require all public, Catholic, francophone, charter, and accredited independent schools — as well as independent early childhood service providers — to administer standardized assessments on literacy and math, and report results to parents and Alberta Education and Childcare.

Education Minister Demetrios Nicolaides said the legislation aims to ensure students receive help as soon as learning gaps appear.
