The photo, I think, was taken in the early to mid-1870s with the camera position being the second floor King Street front balcony of the Royal Exchange Hotel which was located at the southwest junction of King and Fifth Streets. Article content

In 1900 the Royal Exchange burned and was replaced by the Victoria Block which still stands and has been subjected to a wonderful restoration.

The direction of the photo is to the east and encompasses the north side of King Street, from Fifth Street, easterly, to the upper bend
