A Dorchester man picked up by an Uber driver in Cambridge looped a cord around her neck when they stopped for a light at Columbus and Massachusetts avenues and tried to strangle her before she managed to escape and he got behind the wheel and drove to Grove Hall around 6:30 p.m. on Thursday, police say.
Police say they caught up with Christopher Dawkins, 24, as he drove down Blue Hill Avenue near Stanwood Street in Grove Hall, by pinging the driver's phone, which she had left behind in the car after he pulled her into the back seat and she then managed to open a door and escape.
Stanwood faces arraignment today in Boston Municipal Court on charges of carjacking, strangulation/suffocation, assault and battery by means of a dangerous weapon and receiving a stolen motor vehicle, police say.
