RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC) -- The Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) has announced that it is stocking supplies and inspecting equipment to ensure its crews and materials are geared up for winter weather.

VDOT is responsible for treating and clearing snow from nearly 60,000 miles of state-maintained roads.

The department said winter preparation is a year-round activity, with crews checking equipment and performing test runs on clear roads to prepare for snowy and icy conditions.

Crews also reportedly use snowplow simulators to practice driving through various obstacles to test their ability before getting on the roads.
