BRADENTON, Fla. ( WWSB ) - The city of Bradenton is adding special pavement markings at major intersections to help drivers avoid blocking the box and reduce gridlock.

The markings are part of an effort to reduce dangerous conditions for motorists, pedestrians, and first responders.

Bradenton Police Department says, “Slowdown in school zones!”

Blocking the box happens when a driver enters a congested intersection and cannot clear it before their light turns red, stopping cross traffic and causing traffic jams.

Intersections receiving these markings include 1st Street at Manatee Avenue, 6th Avenue, 9th Avenue, and 13th Avenue. Some of these are already complete, while plans are underway for many more locations.

Bradenton Police will continue to enforce the do not block the box rule.
