MAPLEWOOD, NJ (PIX 11) — With the Trump administration defying multiple judges’ orders to pay out SNAP benefits for families, a local business in New Jersey is lending a hand, giving out free meals to ease the strain.
At The Roman Gourmet in Maplewood, Vinnie Loffredo moves quickly between the oven and the counter, crafting and boxing up fresh, hot pizzas throughout the day. The shop is a family-owned business that’s been in the community for more than five decades.
“54 years,” Loffredo said. “My dad opened here in 1971, so we’ve been here a long time.”
With the government shutdown and subsequent political fight shutting off federal food assistance, Loffredo wanted to give back by offering SNAP recipients a free meal for their families.
