MADISON (WKOW) – The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources (DNR) is urging hunters to distinguish swans from other waterfowl this hunting season. All wild swans are protected in Wisconsin, making it illegal to hunt native trumpeter swans, tundra swans, and non-native mute swans.

Hunters should be aware that shooting a swan could lead to fines and revocation of hunting, fishing, and trapping privileges.

Tundra swans are smaller and can be identified by their high-pitched call. Non-native mute swans have an orange bill and a distinctive black knob. Trumpeter swans are North America's largest native waterfowl, measuring 4.5 to 5 feet long and weighing 20 to 30 pounds.
