All of Thomas Onodera’s hopes were fading.

The first-day leader at the Hawaii Army National Guard/HHSAA Bowling State Championships saw his lead melt down. On day two, his middle game was a series of missed spares and torment while Pearl City sophomore Trenton “TJ” Ichimura made up ground.

On the lane next to Onodera’s, Ichimura rolled a 268 in his seventh game of the two-day event to take the overall lead. When frame eight arrived, Castle coach Sumi Onodera asked Thomas a simple question.

“I asked him, do you want to know what you need? He said no,” she said.

Thomas Onodera proceeded to rack up a strike in frame eight, a strike in frame nine, and a strike in frame 10. Hope was more than restored. He closed out with two more strikes, emphatically reacting to the final 10 pins.
