The Maui County Council has until Nov. 25 to select a successor to fill the vacant Council seat created by the death of Council member Tasha Kama, who died Oct. 26 at the age of 73.

The Council plans to meet at 9 a.m. on Nov. 20 to hear public testimony and consider nominees. If the Council does not name Kama’s successor by the Nov. 25 deadline, then Mayor Richard Bissen will fill the vacancy representing Kahului.

Kama chaired the Council’s Housing and Land Use Committee that — beginning June 9 — held seven contentious hearings on Bissen’s Bill 9, which would convert 6,100 short-term vacation rentals into long-term housing for Maui residents.
