Dozens of people gathered inside a newly constructed water storage tank in the hills west of Cedar City on Tuesday to celebrate the near-completion of the $6 million project.

The massive structure, known as the Eightmile Hills water tank, is located to the west of Iron Springs Road and south of Desert Mound Road.

“Not very often do we get to come in here and stand in the bottom of a tank, unless, of course, you’ve got some scuba gear on,” Paul Monroe, director of the Central Iron County Water Conservancy District, said as he welcomed those in attendance.

Monroe said construction workers noticed something remarkable while they were inside the tank.
