COLUMBIA, S.C. — A Midlands restaurant is turning community support into global relief, collecting donations to help families in Jamaica recover from Hurricane Melissa.
At Tati’s Island Cuisine on Decker Boulevard, boxes and bags filled with clothes, canned food, and household supplies are being packed up for shipment to the island.
"I feel like Jamaica has given the world so much, and right now they need us,” said restaurant owner Tati Sasha Simpson, whose family is from Jamaica.
Simpson said she knew she needed to act quickly when she heard the storm was approaching.
"As I heard the news that the storm was coming, the first thing I said was we need to get active, so here at Tati’s, we were proactive by collecting donations as soon as we heard it was coming,” Simpson said.
