TOLEDO, Ohio -- Runs are associated with baseball and softball, but they can be critical, too, in basketball, as Marshall University's men's team proved Saturday.
The Thundering Herd (2-0) used second-half runs of 11 and 13 points to overcome a 10-point halftime deficit and defeat Toledo 85-73 in Savage Arena.
"Coach Corny (Jackson) at halftime ripped into us pretty good," said MU guard Jalen Speer, who finished with a game-high 20 points, including 18 on 3-point baskets. "I took it kind of personally."
Marshall trailed 44-34 with 18:33 to play before Speer's 3-pointer started a 10-7 run. Speer then made a pair of free throws to begin an 11-0 stretch. During that run, Wyatt Fricks hit a 3-pointer that put the Herd up 55-53.
