West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Saturday said former India cricketer Sourav Ganguly “deserved” to be the president of the International Cricket Council (ICC), the apex governing body of the sport, since he is known globally and has contributed a lot to the country and the state.

During a felicitation ceremony at the Eden Gardens, Kolkata , the CM bestowed cricketer Richa Ghosh, 22, with the state’s prestigious Banga Bhushan award for her performance in India’s victorious Women’s Cricket World Cup campaign and handed her an appointment letter as a deputy superintendent of police (DSP) in the state police force.

Banerjee also congratulated the other team members of the World Cup squad.
