An Indian-origin Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT) employee was questioned by three masked agents about his immigration status while working on a construction project in the US state and also asked whether he was aware of the new mayor of New York, Zohran Mamdani. The incident has drawn criticism from state officials and has raised concerns about the targeting of US citizens based on race or ethnicity.

The individual questioned is an Indian-American and a US citizen, and was performing his duties on the Busse Highway resurfacing project when agents approached and questioned him about his background and connections to New York, The Chicago Sun Times reported.

This encounter occurred amid heightened scrutiny of immigration enforcement activities in the Chicago area.
