A uniformed Princess Anne has basked in the Sydney sunshine for her first day of ceremonial duties during a low-key visit to Australia.

The only sister of King Charles - often dubbed the hardest-working British royal - is spending four days travelling the country with her husband, Sir Tim Laurence, to mark the centenary of the Royal Australian Corps of Signals.

The visit comes at an awkward time for the British royal family after her younger brother, formerly known as prince Andrew, was stripped of his title over his links to the late pedophile financier Jeffrey Epstein.

On Sunday, the 75-year-old princess took part in a commemorative service at the ANZAC Memorial in central Sydney before attending the signal corps' centenary at nearby Victoria Barracks.

She has been the corps' colonel
