For many people, retirement might look like travelling the world. Maybe puttering in the garden or going back to school.

Not so for Diana Matheson. The Olympic soccer star was on Canada’s national team from 2003 to 2020, and she announced the end of her playing career in July 2021. She then promptly took on a mammoth task: building the first professional women’s soccer league in Canada.

Her story is captured in the new documentary The Pitch, which has been touring film festivals around Canada this fall and debuts Nov. 9 on TVO’s digital platforms. It’ll head to broadcast television in spring 2026, airing on TSN and RDS.

Directed by Michèle Hozer, and filmed over two years, The Pitch follows Matheson’s journey to create the Northern Super League (NSL) — facing many doubters along the way
