Tribes from across California filled Sacramento’s Capitol Mall to celebrate Native American Heritage Month, honoring generations of Indigenous culture, history, and resilience. The parade featured tribal flags, dancers, and floats from communities across the state. Chairwoman Sara Dutschke of the Ione Band of Miwok Indians emphasized the importance of recognizing tribal sovereignty and government-to-government relations with California. Attendees, including former educator Isabel Johnson, praised the turnout and visibility of Native voices, while Assemblymember James Ramos, California’s first Native American legislator, highlighted growing recognition at the state level. The event closed with song, dance, and a call for year-round recognition of Indigenous communities.
