Opposition parties across Pakistan are holding nationwide protests on Sunday as the Shehbaz Sharif government moves to pass a key constitutional amendment bill that proposes sweeping changes, including granting greater powers to Army Chief Asim Munir. The Opposition has slammed the move, warning that it would “shake the foundations of the Constitution.”
The proposed 27th Constitutional Amendment seeks to significantly alter the balance of power among Pakistan’s state institutions, particularly by strengthening the military’s role. It introduces a new and powerful post of Chief of Defence Forces (CDF) , to be held by the Army Chief, currently Field Marshal Asim Munir, who would also serve as the constitutionally recognised head of the Army, Navy, and Air Force.
