We are a country which has a propensity to squabble over virtually everything — even holidays.

While there is something dynamic about the give-and-take which is analogous of free speech in a democratic republic, it also can be exhausting.

Veterans Day, however, ought to be the one commemoration on which we all can agree.

The narrative of America would not exist were it not for Americans who were willing to step forward to serve, protect and defend it.

These days, the numbers of those willing to serve are much smaller than those of our childhoods, when every neighborhood was filled with men who served in World War II or Korea or Vietnam.

They were a living reminder of what freedom requires.
