A single pothole has caused highway havoc in leaving dozens of cars instantly undriveable and at least 28 drivers stranded in dangerous conditions.

The Princes Freeway at Nar Nar Goon, 60km southeast of Melbourne , turned into pit lane as car after car struck the hazardous pothole, with repairs dragging into a second day due to heavy rain.

Bronwyn Drummond and her three children were just 10 minutes from their Pakenham home when heavy rain set in, making it near impossible to see the hazard ahead.

“There was no avoiding it. The car in front of me slammed its brakes on, my car’s flashing and I just pulled over,” Drummond said.

“You know, it was just car after car after car. Never seen that before.”

“I just kept saying, ‘keep your seatbelts on’.”
