Voters in Syracuse and Onondaga County made history Tuesday in an unusually eventful off-year election.
Sharon Owens will be the barrier-breaking 55th mayor of Syracuse. Owens is the first African American and only the second woman elected to the city’s highest office. We congratulate her on the victory and hold high hopes for her administration over the next four years.
Owens, the current deputy mayor and a Democrat, decisively beat three challengers, earning 74% of votes cast. Her message was that Syracuse is on an upward trajectory and poised to rise higher as the Interstate 81 viaduct comes down and the Micron development in the suburbs begins. It clearly resonated with voters.
