A powerful earthquake struck off northern Japan Sunday evening, triggering a tsunami advisory that was lifted three hours later following several aftershocks reported by the Japan Meteorological Agency.

The earthquake, with an upgraded magnitude of 6.9 and depth of 16km, struck off the coast of Iwate prefecture at 5:03 pm Japan time.

There were no immediate reports of injuries or damage, or any reports of abnormalities at the two nuclear power plants in the area.

The agency issued an advisory for a tsunami of up to 1 metre along the northern coastal region, and subsequently said the water could reach as high as 3 metres in some spots.
