As a small girl in Highland, Baily Wilkins attended San Bernardino schools.

She watched her mom teach special education students there. So it made sense when Wilkins later returned to her school district as a substitute teacher at Emmerton Elementary School, where she too worked with special-needs students.

“During that time, I really fell in love with it, working with this population,” Wilkins said. “… I’ve always been interested in being a special education teacher.”

When Wilkins, 30, received an email inviting her and other San Bernardino City Unified School District employees to join a new UC Riverside program, it was a win for both sides.
