HOLLYWOOD — Before the clouds came and a little rain fell, Toby Edwards basked in sunshine Saturday morning while walking outside the Stono Ferry Racetrack’s perimeter.

“It’s almost too good,“ Edwards, the Steeplechase of Charleston's race director, said.

He was talking about the weather, and he was joking, of course.

The conditions were indeed perfect. Nothing short of an alien invasion will stop this event on Sunday.

Five races will be held with a beefed-up total purse of $130,000, the last being the premier Alston Cup. The day will cap off a racing season that began months ago in Aiken and Camden.
