Councils throughout the UK have shelled out tens of thousands of pounds to remove British flags put up as part of "Operation Raise the Colours".

Freedom of Information (FoI) requests have unveiled that over 380 local authorities have spent at least £70,000 on removing Union Jacks and St George's Crosses since the movement sprung up over the summer.

The flag movement kicked off during the Women's Euros, with families demonstrating their support by displaying flags from windows or on poles in their gardens.

This ignited a grassroots campaign where flags were affixed to lampposts and bridges, originating in Birmingham and East London.
