Community members in a northwest Des Moines neighborhood are getting a new park playground to replace decades-old equipment.
Des Moines City Council members on Monday, Nov. 3, unanimously approved a $145,000 grant from the Iowa Department of Natural Resources from the federal Land & Water Conservation Fund to replace an aging playground at Cheatom Park just north of downtown Des Moines. The playground is estimated to cost $310,000, according to a City Council memo .
Located within the Cheatom Park neighborhood, the 3.5-acre park serves more than 2,600 residents within a 10-minute walk, based on a report from the nonprofit Trust for Public Land.
