MARTINSBURG – The 17TH Annual Big Tree Contest winner was announced at the Eastern Panhandle Conservation District (EPCD) fall Awards Banquet Tuesday evening. Former Delegate John Overington presented Jay Hocter with a check for $500 and a copy of the poem “Trees” by Joyce Kilmer.

The species selected for 2025 was the Linden tree, also called Basswood tree. The Linden trees grow from 30–115 feet tall with the trunk 3 or 4 feet thick with heart shaped leaves 5-6 inches long and 3 to 4 inches broad with slender twigs.
