Former NFL Commissioner Paul Tagliabue has died, his family announced Sunday. Tagliabue was 84.
The apparent cause of death, per Tagliabue’s family, was heart failure complicated by Parkinson’s Disease.
Tagliabue succeeded long-time Commissioner Pete Rozelle in 1989. He held the title through 2006.
Since 1960, the NFL has had just three commissioners: Rozelle, Tagliabue, and current head Roger Goodell.
Tagliabue, who was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 2020 as a contributor.
Prior to becoming commissioner, Tagliabue had worked as an outside counsel for the NFL with the firm of Covington & Burling, where he practiced law for 20 years.
Tributes poured in from across the NFL.
