In municipal government, the needs of the community must come before party politics. The closer the government is to the people, the less partisanship matters. This is the spirit which was intended when I sponsored the ordinance for a citizen-led redistricting initiative in Valparaiso.
The amended ordinance, which was subsequently passed by the city council — no longer met that standard, so I voted against it.
Given this was such a high-profile initiative for me, and for the city, I am offering the public an explanation as to why, as the author of the original ordinance, I could not support the amended ordinance.
