Cleveland Guardians closer Emmanuel Clase and reliever Luis Ortiz have been indicted in Brooklyn on charges of illegal gambling and face up to 65 years in prison.
According to ESPN’s Jeff Passan, Emmanuel Clase and Luis Ortiz face charges of “rigging” certain pitches to accommodate bettors. Prosecutors claim the scheme began “as early as May 2023.
Per Passan, Ortiz allegedly received $5,000 to intentionally throw a ball on June 15 in a game against the Seattle Mariners. Clase got $5,000 to plan it, and each piece netted them an additional $7,000.
Ortiz was arrested in Boston on Sunday, and Clase is not yet in custody.
