Former NFL commissioner Paul Tagliabue has died at age 84

Roger Goodell, the current NFL commissioner, paid tribute to Tagliabue, saying, in part, “I cherished the innumerable hours we spent together where he helped shape me as an executive but also as a man, husband and father“

Paul Tagliabue, who served as the NFL commissioner for 17 years, has died, the league confirmed. He was 84.

Tagliabue, who became commissioner in 1989 before he was succeeded by current commissioner Roger Goodell in 2006, died during the early hours of Nov. 9 at his home in Chevy Chase, Md.

His apparent cause of death was heart failure complicated by Parkinson’s disease, his family said in a statement to The Athletic .
