Two Cleveland Guardians pitchers have been indicted by federal prosecutors in Brooklyn on charges they participated in a scheme to manipulate pitch outcomes for betting purposes, ESPN reported.
Luis Ortiz was arrested in Boston on Sunday and is scheduled to appear in federal court Monday. Emmanuel Clase has been indicted but remains out of custody, the report said.
According to a 23-page indictment filed in the Eastern District of New York, the pitchers allegedly threw intentional balls outside the strike zone to help bettors correctly wager on pitch outcomes. Prosecutors say the scheme began as early as May 2023 with Clase before Ortiz became involved.
The indictment outlines two specific instances. On June 15, prosecutors allege Ortiz received $5,000 for throwing an intentional ball
