More than 4,000 flights have been canceled nationwide since the Federal Aviation Administration began restricting flight capacity at 40 major airports on Nov. 7, citing safety concerns amid the ongoing government shutdown, according to USA Today.

The FAA initially ordered airlines to cut 4% of daily flights starting Nov. 4, with Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy announcing incremental increases to 6% by Nov. 11, 8% by Nov. 12, and 10% by Nov. 14, accoring to the report.

Duffy warned that if the shutdown continues, reductions could reach up to 20% of scheduled flights, severely impacting travel ahead of Thanksgiving, the outlet said.

Data from FlightAware shows more than 1,000 cancellations each day since the restrictions began, including 1,025 on Nov. 7 and 1,566 on Nov. 8.
