The LSU soccer team fell painfully shy of the Southeastern Conference tournament championship Sunday as Vanderbilt edged out the Tigers following a pair of extra time periods and a penalty shootout that lasted 10 rounds.
After extra time came to a close with a 1-1 tie, Vanderbilt prevailed 8-7 in the penalty shootout to claim the SEC title at Ashton Brosnaham Soccer Complex in Pensacola, Florida.
Mary Beth McLaughlin made the penalty kick to put Vanderbilt up one in 10th round. Next up was LSU’s Jazmin Ferguson, who was denied by Vanderbilt keeper Sara Wojdelko to clinch the victory for the Commodores.
LSU was the No. 5 seed in the SEC tournament and finishes as the runner-up after and having won four straight games prior to facing No. 2-seeded Vanderbilt in the championship game.
