November 9, 1948 - At 12:01 a.m. on Nov. 9, 1948, Offutt Airforce Base gained national prominence as it became the home of Strategic Air Command headquarters.

The U.S. Air Force Secretary chose Offutt due to its location in the middle of the country, far from the borders of the continental U.S.
