COLUMBUS, Ga. (WTVM) - St. Mary’s Road United Methodist Church hosted its 12th annual City-Wide Veterans Sunday Service on Sunday to honor and celebrate the brave men and women who served the nation. This year, church members honored the first black woman prisoner of war, Shoshana Johnson.

March 23, 2003, is a day Johnson will never forget. It was the day she was captured and held captive for 22 days during Operation Iraqi Freedom.

“22 days of wondering what the next moments would hold, 22 days of wondering if I’ll ever see my daughter grow up, and wondering if my parents were okay,” Johnson said.

In 1998, Panama native Johnson enlisted in the United States Army as a cook. In 2003, she was deployed to Iraq.
