PROVIDENCE – Sunday afternoon was never in doubt.
It was Ponaganset girls volleyball’s time to make history. And the Chieftains made sure it wasn’t going to waste. The top-ranked Division III team in the state played like it in a sweep of No. 2 Tiverton at Rhode Island College.
Ponaganset grabbed a 25-15, 25-18, 25-21 victory in just over an hour for the first volleyball championship in program history. The Chieftains have four runner-up finishes – 2004, 2005, 2011 and 2024 – in its history, but they finally got over the hump.
