The Toledo Walleye fell to the Iowa Heartlanders 2-1 on Sunday at home despite registering more than three times as many shots on goal as their opponents.

Toledo out-shot Iowa 31-9 in the contest, but Heartlanders goalie Riley Mercer was up to the task in making 30 saves to lead the victory.

Riley McCourt opened the scoring for Toledo less than three minutes into play thanks to assists by Nolan Moyle and Denis Smirnov. But that was the only offense the Walleye would be able to summon all night.

Iowa’s Matthew Sop tied the game at 1 late in the first period and Mike Koster scored what proved to be the game-winning goal midway through the third.

Toledo failed to convert on its only power-play opportunity of the game, though its penalty kill went 3-for-3 on the night.
