The NSW Commissioner of Corrective Services will review inmate classifications following the assault of four prison guards earlier this year.

Last month, thousands of NSW prison officers walked off the job in protest over the sentence handed to an inmate who bashed the guards at a Cessnock jail.

Cameron Welsh, 26, was given a three-year community corrections order (CCO) for assaulting the guards.

The Public Service Association (PSA) says two of the victims will never work as prison officers again.

Today, the NSW Minister for Corrective Services, Anoulack Chanthivong, announced a review into the way inmates were classified.
