PORTLAND, Ore. — Lenny Wilkens, a Basketball Hall of Famer who played for and coached the Portland Trail Blazers in the franchise's early years and led the Seattle SuperSonics to their only NBA championship, has died. He was 88.

Wilkens died peacefully at home Sunday, surrounded by family, according to a statement from his family. A cause of death was not released.

"With deep love and sadness, we announce that Lenny Wilkens passed away peacefully at home on Nov. 9, 2025," the family said in a statement to KGW's sister station KING 5 in Seattle . "He is survived by his devoted wife Marilyn, his three children and seven grandchildren."

The Trail Blazers announced Wilkens' death Sunday.

"All of Rip City is deeply saddened to hear of Lenny Wilkens passing," the team said in a statement.
