Most believed there would be a new soccer champion in the mighty Maryland Interscholastic Athletic Association A Conference this season.
Two-time defending champion Loyola Blakefield had another new coach, eight new starters and graduated a powerhouse senior class that included the past two Metro Player of the Year recipients.
But the No. 2 Dons never wavered, too busy settling into roles and working hard to try to maintain the program’s lofty standard.
And there they were on Sunday, feeling right at home against No. 1 McDonogh in the title game. Senior forward Will Sharpe finished a goal fit for a championship game-winner late in the first half, and the Dons boldly protected the advantage the rest of the way for a well-earned 1-0 victory at Loyola University’s Ridley Athletic Complex
