Home.
That’s what nearly every member of the military thinks about.
When bombs are exploding and bullets flying, that word can seem tantalizingly out of reach.
On Veterans Day, wounded warriors like Brad Ivanchan will remember the moments when they felt they’d never make it home.
The night of June 13, 2012, U.S.M.C. Corp. Ivanchan was on patrol in Afghanistan when he took a fateful step.
A few feet one way, he would have been fine. But a few inches another way, he would have been dead.
As it was, he stepped on the edge of the dread “IED” – an improvised explosive device. The explosion ripped off his right leg below the knee and shredded his left leg so bad it later had to be partially amputated.
Yet, as Veterans Day approaches, he considers himself lucky.
