The founder of a global humanitarian movement for first responders in disaster and war zones has been named the 2026 Australian of the Year for NSW.

Alison Thompson OAM began her journey in humanitarian aid when she was caught up in the 9/11 terror attack in New York City while working there as an investment banker.

Dr Thompson rushed to the World Trade Center with her first-aid kit after the planes struck. She stayed for nine months offering relief with like-minded people.

Dr Thompson founded Third Wave Volunteers, which coordinates volunteers who bring relief around the world in countries such as Ukraine, Syria, Afghanistan and Sri Lanka.

"These frontline disasters are off the charts," Dr Thompson said.
