In 1924, this news organization established a nonprofit to help Delawareans in times of need. After more than a century in operation − and as donations dwindled due to donors finding new and more direct ways to donate to their chosen causes − the Needy Family Fund is coming to close.

Delaware Online/The News Journal is distributing the remaining funds to the Food Bank of Delaware, as federal cutbacks are expected to create more demand on the agency. As part of this effort, we're spotlighting Food Bank programs throughout the year. This is the second in a series of stories highlighting food insecurity in Delaware.
